Trousers, Jeans & Length

Men's lower-body sizes — waist and inseam, not chest

W × L for jeans, EU trouser waist scale, inseam/length codes and the continental waist detail — plus how stretch and cut change the fit.

Trousers / Jeans / Slacks — Waist

EU trouser = waist(in) + 16 roughly (32 in waist ≈ EU 82 or EU 48 depending on scale). The jacket-scale EU and trouser-scale EU are different — read the cm waist column.

Two distinct EU-bottom scales

Jacket-scale EU 40–64 counts chest, not waist. Trouser-scale EU 64–116 counts waist cm directly (64/68 = waist 64–68 cm). EU 80 here ≠ EU 80 as a jacket.

Trouser Length / Inseam

Trousers are sold as W × L — waist and inseam in inches are separate. The inseam shown is the product inner leg, not body leg length.

Reading W × L

W32 × L32 = 32 in waist, 32 in inseam (inner leg). Convert: 1 in = 2.54 cm, so W32 ≈ 81 cm, L32 ≈ 81 cm.

Jeans Waist ↔ Alpha (Brand Proxy)

Many brands also add a letter for jeans — brand-specific, inconsistent; use waist cm or W number as truth and the letter only as a search filter.

Letter is a guide, not a standard

Jeans letters vary by brand. Use waist cm (or W) as truth.

Fit & Common Mistakes

Fit & common mistakes

  • Waist vs jacket chest: a man can wear a 42 jacket and W34 trousers — different scales, both medium-large. Never convert trousers from jacket size.
  • Don't buy W by dress/alpha letter — W in inches is the only reliable waist measure.
  • Rise & cut (slim, straight, relaxed, skinny) change hip & thigh fit but not the waist code.
  • Stretch denim: negative ease (~−1 to −2 cm) vs rigid denim — a 32W stretch jean may fit a 33 in waist.
  • Body height vs inseam: trousers are product measure; compare inseam to your own inside-leg length.
